Digital Switchover is the process of converting all UK broadcasting from analogue to digital. The benefits of receiving television via a digital signal include improved picture quality, improved sound and more choice.  The timetable for DSO was announced by Tessa Jowell on 15th September 2005.  The first region to be converted will be Border; which is scheduled for conversion in 2008.  Followed by Westcountry, HTV Wales and Granada in 2009.  Please click here for more details about the announcement.

Once a region has been converted to digital you will no longer be able to view television using your old analogue television on its own.  The easiest way to convert your television to digital is to buy a Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) set-top box.  DTT is the only way to receive digital television through an aerial (although in some areas an aerial upgrade may be required).

FREEVIEW™ is the free to air digital service which gives you up to 30 free channels when you purchase a set-top box (from around £50), providing you're in an area of DTT coverage.  Top-up TV is the subscription based service that is also available in areas that can receive DTT.  For more information on these services please select the logos below.

DTT is not the only method of receiving digital television.  Other digital services (e.g. cable, satellite and broadband), are also available in some areas.  Digital UK is the independent, not for profit organisation that is co-ordinating the UK's switchover to digital television, for more information please click here.
