Digital Switchover

Digital Switchover is the process of converting all UK broadcasting from analogue to digital. The benefits of receiving television via a digital signal include:

  • More Choice
  • Improved picture quality
  • Improved sound

Within each region the switchover will be done by transmitter.  However, the list below shows the year in which each region is expected to switch:

  • Anglia 2011
  • Border 2008/2009
  • Central 2011
  • Channel Islands 2010
  • Granada 2009
  • London 2012
  • Meridian 2012
  • STV Central 2010/2011
  • STV North 2010
  • Tyne Tees 2012
  • Ulster 2012
  • Wales 2009/2010
  • West 2010/2011
  • West Country 2009
  • Yorkshire 2011

Once a region has been converted to digital you will no longer be able to view television using your old analogue television on its own. The easiest way to convert your television to digital is to buy a Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) set-top box. DTT is the only way to receive digital television through an aerial (although in some areas an aerial upgrade may be required).
