Digital data for use in GIS systems fall into two broad categories: VECTOR and RASTER. The type of data required depends on the purpose for which it is to be used.
Vector Data
Vector map data is created on computer. Individual map features such as roads, buildings and rivers are represented as points, lines and polygons. Therefore individual features can be selected and interrogated within a GIS system. For more information click here.
Raster Data
Raster data are cell-based spatial datasets, consisting of a regular grid of cells which cover an area. Raster datasets are best used as a background on which to display other data. Examples of raster formats are: jpeg and tiff files. For more information click here.
